I was born and grew up in Echuca, attending Echuca East Primary School and surviving 1980s Echuca High School. After completing school I started a signwriting apprenticeship with a local tradesman, then my own business in the middle of the 'recession we had to have'. In my mid 20s I left Echuca to travel; visiting northern Australia, Canada, Africa and eventually settling in Europe for more than 10 years. I've been signwriting again now since returning home in 2012. I trade both as Greg Chandler Signs and as Steady Hand Signs.
I started in the sign industry as an apprentice in 1988. Back then computer cut self adhesive lettering was in its early days and the majority of signs were painted. When I finished my apprenticeship and started my own business I only did painted signs for the first few years and this is when I really honed my brush skills. When the time was right I added a vinyl cutter and in 2004 I purchased a wide format digital printer and hot-laminating equipment.
Because I'm a career signwriter who does:
1) hand painted signs,
2) computer cut vinyl lettering,
3) wide format digital prints and
4) Gold-leaf lettering for traditional honour boards,
we can choose the best method for your particular job and I won't try to convince you that printed stickers are always the answer for everything.
